13 ADMONISHMENTS
          BY ROBERT McDONALD

ROBERT McDONALD's poetry has appeared online at Boxcar Poetry Review, The Idea Factory, and 42 Opus, and in print in Court Green, Gertrude, Southern Poetry Review, and Mudfish, among others. Recently he's been obsessed with house centipedes—just the fact that they are named "house" centipedes, meaning they are found where they are supposed to be.

Art will always return to the supreme menace of domestic life.

Everyone's dreams dissolve under the terms of the departmental investigation.

I've always felt that when making love we're essentially asking a question.

Try living in Paris, an experiment that might last only a year, but is followed at once by the rest of your life.

Don't drink too much rot-gut tequila, or spend so much time at the record store, or the racetrack, don't smack anyone's old lady around.

Be amazed at dragonflies, ambassadors of prehistory among the daylilies now in bloom—not to mention benches, not to mention fountains.

Long for the snow, and don't be afraid to cheer the rain as it falls.

Crickets and katydids never practice, each evening constitutes the actual performance.

Ghosts should walk, not flit, or float, even if no one sees you, remember that your feet are your own.

Add to the list of beautiful words: parsnip, and preen.

The sight of a butterfly is always a glance back into childhood.

You'll find there's not one special rule to be applied to every case.

So don't ask me why the night air should suddenly smell of peaches.
